PEERS POST:
Hello everyone,
I have recently completed a training on classroom environments; therefore, I chose the topic of Physical space.
The first part of environment that would help challenging behaviors would be furniture placement.
According to Kaiser, B., & Sklar Rasminsky, J. (2017) the placement of furniture can affect the mood of the children and teachers, noise levels, and focus length of the children. Creating an environment that has a natural flow and defined areas effects how the children using the space function. Children are more inclined to be interested in specific areas if the space is defined. Separating loud areas from quiet areas reduces the noise level.
The second part of physical space would be wall decorations. Displaying the children’s work on the walls makes them feel part of the room and important… They also have opportunities to revisit activities from earlier days.
The third part of physical space that would help behavioral issues would be having a balance of independent and large group spaces. If a child feels like being alone or working independently, they should have a designated space to do so.
