Module 4 Intersecting Identities Case Study

Purpose

This assignment is designed to help you apply the concepts of intersecting identities and cultural pluralism to both assessment of the client, self-awareness, and understanding of how diversity affects the client relationship.

Course Objectives

  • CO2: Practice cultural competence through self-awareness, assessment of intersecting identities, and application of non-Western interventions.

Requirements

Your paper should be 3-5 pages not including title and reference pages, double-spaced, APA format. Please cite all references.

Guidelines

Identify a client (individual, couple, or family) who is seen at the practicum agency( INTERN SITE), for whom intersecting identities present a significant aspect of their psychosocial challenges. Preferably this would be someone with whom you work, but if you are not seeing clients directly at this point, it can be a client your supervisor or a staff member sees.

  1. Describe the client’s demographics, using their own identifying language.
  2. Describe the presenting problems and the role of the social worker or student.
  3. Offer a conceptualization of how intersecting identities present challenges and opportunities for the client.
  4. Share your plan of how you (or the staff member) have addressed or hope to address these challenges and opportunities.
  5. Examine how your own (or the staff member’s) intersecting identities may have an impact on the client relationship, and how these should be or have been managed.
