Instructions: ● Complete the speech outline for your Advocacy Speech using the outline provided below. ● Upload your current working outline of the Advocacy Speech before class time Thursday, May 10th, so other students may provide feedback during class time. Speech Outline: ● Focus on the individual sections of the speech; introduction, main points, and conclusion. ● Parts of the Speech and Parts of MMS ● Keep this in mind: ○ The introduction and conclusion are nearly complete. ■ The narrative you provided in Q#3, is your attention getter. ■ The thesis is literally, ■ “You should support and their efforts to .” ■ And the preview is literally, ■ “So today we will discuss, ■ MP1 , ■ MP2 how hopes to help, and finally ■ MP3 why their work matters.” 1. Introduction 1. Attention Getter: The attention getter is where ATTENTION will occur. This is where you will introduce the narrative selected during Q#3, question #3. 1. Stop the narrative directly after the climax but before the resolution. 2. Thesis: The thesis will follow the Actor, Action, Issue format just like the debate proposition. (Who will do What, and for Whom or Why.) 3. Preview: Present a preview of the main points. 1. MP1: NEED – you won’t say the word “need” but you will give a two or three word phrase that captures the essence of the NEED. 2. MP2: SATISFACTION – you won’t say the word but you will give a two or three word phrase that captures the essence of the SATISFACTION. 3. MP3: VISUALIZATION: again, you won’t say the word but you will give a two or three word phrase that captures the essence of the VISUALIZATION. 2. MP1: NEED by the end of this main point, the audience should understand the social issue, the organizations history as relevant to the issue, but stop before discussing their work. 1. Transition between MP1 and MP2 3. MP2: SATISFACTION: This where you will share what the organization does and what you are doing to help the organization. 1. Transition between MP2 and MP3 4. MP3: VISUALIZATION: Similar to the stock issues of Harms and Advantages used during the Parliamentary Debate, you will share what will occur without the work of the organization (harms) and/or what will occur because of the organization’s efforts (advantages). This could be an excellent place to share the end of the narrative began as part of the attention getter. 5. Conclusion: 1. Review the MPs. 2. Restate the thesis. 3. Return to Attention and Call to ACTION: Remind the audience of the attention getter and call them to ACTION. ● You should have as much as possible completed before class time on Thursday, in order to receive the best feedback during the engagement.
