Human Rights Violation
The Holocaust was the systematic, state-sponsored persecution and murder of six million Jews which, was an evolving process that took place throughout Europe when Adolf Hitler and the Nazi Party, its allies, and collaborators came into power in Germany in 1933.  When they came to power, the Nazis quickly began using the government to target and exclude Jews from German society.  They became increasingly radical between 1933 and 1945 and enacted discriminatory laws and organized violence targeting Germany’s Jews until they culminated a plan, which led to the organized and systematic mass murder of European Jews. The Nazi German regime implemented this genocide between 1941 and 1945 (Encyclpedia.ushmm.org).

The Holocaust is an example of a gross and systemic violation of human rights which would have required prosecution, making amends to those who have been wronged, the examination of existing laws, and advocating changes in the legal system with the aim of enhancing justice.  There are two elements in order to construct a remedy; a victim’s access to the appropriate authorities to have his claim fairly heard, and the redress or relief that he can receive  (International Center for Transitional Justice, 2009). Since the victims of the Holocaust were restricted to concentration camps and denied access to the outside world, word of their abuse was kept hidden from the public, so it was difficult to develop an appropriate remedy until they were discovered.

After the devastation of World War I, the victorious western powers imposed a series of harsh treaties upon the defeated nations.  These treaties stripped the Central Powers (Germany and Austria-Hungary, joined by Ottoman Turkey and Bulgaria) of substantial territories and imposed significant reparation payments.  One of the treaties, the Treaty of Versailles, forced Germany to concede territories to Belgium, the Czech Republic, and Poland.  The most demeaning portion of the treating for the defeated Germany was Article 231, commonly known as the “War Guilt Clause.” This clause forced Germany to accept complete responsibility for initiating World War I, as such Germany was liable for all material damages (Encyclpedia.ushmm.org).

Human Rights Violation

South America, Pinochet’s Rule in Chile. Approximately 30,000 people were tortured, 1,200 -3,200 were murdered between 1973 -1990. (Map of international) Pinochet was a person who wanted to have a divided society where one part would consist of the well off or well to do and the other half or other part would be the unfortunate and led well off. These less well-off people of the Chilean society would not have any assistance from Social Services. The distance between the well to do and the not well to do caused the economy to crash in 1982. (Map of international)

Remedies/Outcomes

Pinochet was soon replaced by Patricio Alwyn after Alwyn was appointed as Senator for life. Pinochet was arrested with an international arrest warrant from a Spanish judge. Pinochet was charged with 94 counts of torture, conspiracy and assassination charges and put on house arrest until he died. (Map of international)

The International Center for Transitional Justice is an organization that attempts to assist victims of serve human rights violations with remedies. These remedies can include things such as reparation, prosecution of the violator of human rights, reform of state laws and institutions and full exploration of the truth. (ictj.org)

Two Remedies

The first remedies I would use for the human rights violations would be full exploration of the truth. There are so many hidden agendas and things kept in secret regarding human rights violations that to effectively real the extent of violations, the truth must be known. If the truth is not known, these violations can have a way of repeating themselves without the implication for freedom, justice, and equality. This is like the Black Lives Matter movement. So many secrets were and continue to be hidden with the treatment of African Americans, the history, and the truth.

Secondly, I would recommend reparation. People have got to be put back into position where they can rebuild and establish themselves within society as a race of people that matter other than something that was unfortunate to of happened to them. To be stripped of your values, morals and human rights can have an everlasting effect on that culture as well as the society. (facinghistory.org).
